Yorkshire: Snow alert as big chill begins - Latest News .

The low tasting of what could be the first major snowfall of the wintertime is expected to come today.

Forecasters said northern Scotland was set for a cover of snow later, which could open to the remainder of the area by the weekend.

Temperatures will fall below zero and up to 10cm (4in) of coke could come in mountainous areas, with 2-5cm of snow settling in localized patches inland, including the East Midlands, central Scotland and north-west Wales.

A cold north-easterly wind will bring snow showers from the North Sea, with sleet and rain also expected in coastal areas.

The Met Office has issued a weather advisory for great snow elsewhere

later this week, saying that a build-up of low pressure could draw snow showers across England.

Chief forecaster Eddie Carroll said: "The cold weather is clear on its way this week and the world are advised to stop up to see with the figure to make certain they experience the latest information regarding the coming weather.

"Drivers are reminded that they should run out simple vehicle checks before they set out, carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles, monitor the dealings and weather conditions, and project their journeys."

Most at risk are the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire and north-east England, where blizzards and large snowfall have been predicted.

Areas of Birmingham, Shropshire and Hertfordshire are less likely to

experience snow showers.

By the end of the week there may be moderate snow throughout the UK, although this will remain heaviest in Scotland, Orkney and the Shetland Isles.

Most of the nation will see a sub-zero chill tonight, with temperatures expected to return to minus 3C and minus 4C in some places over the following few days.

The cold weather means the blow is probably to fall on the ground, leading to a chance of ice on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office has warned that icy stretches are predicted on Thursday morning, and motorists should take special attention to avoid accidents due to the difficult weather conditions.
